Part 1: Editorial committee, content updates, and evidence grading
No specific author information such as names or contact information is provided within the app. However, the contact information for Medical Joyworks and the names and credentials of the individual team members can be found on the Medical Joyworks website. Some of these physicians clearly take time to respond to the comments and questions that are posed at the end of some of the cases in the app. Each case includes a date of creation and indicates the date each reference was viewed. No grading system is used.
Part 2: Source and authorship information for 3 entries
Reference lists are provided with non-clickable URL’s linking to the original articles. In-text citations are not available. Various types of studies are included such as guidelines, randomized trials, and review articles. Author information is not included in the app for each individual case. However, we know who the team members are for Medical Joyworks and we even see some of them interact with other users in the comments section of each individual case.
Organization of information
The home screen displays a few options to select: Play Cases: Practice your diagnostic skills by selecting and playing an individual case scenario. Then see your score to see how well you did and see the explanation of the diagnosis and reasoning and reference list to learn more. You can replay the cases as many times as you like and save them to your list of favourites. Progress: The percentage of cases for each specialty that you have completed so far. Edit Profile: Edit your personal information and choose if you want to receive promotional email updates. Languages & Settings: Choose the language you want the cases to display in (English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian) and select whether you want to jump directly to the explanation for the cases you’ve already played or not. Invite Friends: Share the app with friends by email, instant messaging, social media, etc. Mailbox icon: This opens up messages about latest updates from the app developers. It currently just shows a message promoting the app Clinical Odyssey. Other apps by Medical Joyworks are also listed at the bottom of the home screen. |
Navigation
You have to select a case to play, then as you navigate through the case, select which investigations and relevant management options you want to perform on the patient after reading about the patient and scenario. Then you will be provided with a score (highest score equals 3 stars) and you can see which responses were correct and incorrect, followed by an explanation of the diagnosis and reasoning, and list of references. Comments and questions between other users and the app developers are also provided.
