To keep you updated on the go, we highlight a free medical app each month!

Librarian reviewers from Saskatchewan Health Authority and Alberta Health Services consider the audience and purpose of the apps, as well as highlighting additional features:

  • In the ‘Evidence’ section, we assess how easily the user can identify the app’s currency and support from the evidence
  • In the ‘Usability’ section, we assess the organization of information and other usability factors that may contribute to user experience

Our complete grading criteria is embedded in the review.

Note: Reviewers are not healthcare professionals and don't appraise the quality of any recommendations within the app. Reviews are not meant as endorsements.

Part 1: Editorial committee, content updates, and evidence grading

The four app developers share a diverse range of educational backgrounds and affiliations, garnering credibility in launching this decision-making app for healthcare professionals. With an easy-to-navigate interface, each entry is well-sourced, fulfilling the products mandate of providing effective evidence-based information within the limited time available for physicians to see their patients. Further, this award-winning app has been featured on CBC Radio, the Calgary Herald, and Canadian Healthcare Technology magazine.

Two drawbacks regarding use of the app are that it is only available on the iOS operating system, and has not been updated in almost 3 years (last update = October 5, 2015)

Part 2: Source and authorship information for 3 entries

Each entry contains a citation list of references, which are located on the Author tab under the Info icon (appearing in the top right hand corner).  A variety of individual tests, scales, and questionnaires are presented, which, together with the name and affiliation of the author responsible for each entry, evokes a transparent process of where the evidence for each entry is taken from.

A particularly unique feature of each entry is the ability for users to send feedback (via an e-mail form), as well as the option to express interest in becoming an entry author.

Organization of information

Each entry is categorized as falling under either Bedside or Investigations. Beside contains a number of interactive tests (complete with explanations) enabling the physician to indicate for (Rules In) or against (Rules Out) for each criteria that is presented.

Entries are arranged alphabetically, thus it is easy to locate information on a particular topic.

The Investigations Section is more in-depth, as it contains detailed explanations of rating scales, complete with guides to understanding estimate ranges.

Navigation

Navigation is easy and intuitive.
