About App of the Month

Librarian reviewers from Saskatchewan Health Authority and Alberta Health Services consider the audience and purpose of the apps, as well as highlighting additional features:

  • In the ‘Evidence’ section, we assess how easily the user can identify the app’s currency and support from the evidence
  • In the ‘Usability’ section, we assess the organization of information and other usability factors that may contribute to user experience

Our complete grading criteria is embedded in the review.

Stated Purpose

“VBAC Reference for Midwives offers easy access to research-based information on risks, benefits and other considerations relevant to a woman's decisions around vaginal birth after caesarean (VBAC)”  https://www.ontariomidwives.ca/apps/vbac-resource-midwives

This app is intended for Ontario midwives' use in facilitating informed choice discussions with clients who have a history of one or more previous low-segment caesarean section. While midwives outside Ontario are welcome to use this tool, as well as other maternity care providers, some information may be specific to the context in which Ontario-based registered midwives provide care. (App Store listing, https://apps.apple.com/ca/app/vbac-resource-for-midwives/id575658302)

Because it’s aimed at midwives, it’s goal is to help ensure a successful vaginal birth for the patient. By breaking down content into manageable sections, the guideline is easier to follow and use appropriately.
