About App of the Month

Librarian reviewers from Saskatchewan Health Authority and Alberta Health Services consider the audience and purpose of the apps, as well as highlighting additional features:

  • In the ‘Evidence’ section, we assess how easily the user can identify the app’s currency and support from the evidence
  • In the ‘Usability’ section, we assess the organization of information and other usability factors that may contribute to user experience

Our complete grading criteria is embedded in the review.

Note: Reviewers are not healthcare professionals and don't appraise the quality of any recommendations within the app. Reviews are not meant as endorsements.

Stated Purpose

Recovery Record Clinician is the first evidence-based, HIPAA compliant application for eating disorder treatment professionals. With Recovery Record, your patients will remain engaged between visits and you will have patient data and tools for timely, targeted intervention.” (1)

“Recovery Record works by linking your Recovery Record Clinician app with your patient's Recovery Record self-monitoring app. By doing this, you will have access to the complete clinical picture and be able to answer the questions: Which patient most needs my attention? Are patient outcomes improving? What should I focus on in this 45 minute patient visit?” (2)

The App allows Clinicians to link their Recovery Record App to their patients personal Recovery Record App, allowing for the monitoring of disordered eating behavior, and their patients feelings and thoughts around eating. It also allows for the Clinician to provide virtual support and feedback to their patient.

Notes

N/A

Part 1: Editorial committee, content updates, and evidence grading

This app is a patient management and data tool as opposed to a reference and/or point-of-care tool. In fairness there was no content to apply an evidence grading system and/or editorial committee to mention.

The app should be assessed more for its functionality in managing patient/client data. For an assessment on the usability of this mobile app see the Usability section.

Part 2: Source and authorship information for 3 entries

There is no clearly identifiable link to evidence-based treatment within the App itself.  There is also no evidence supporting or citations associated with the Coping Skills, Expectations, and/or EPSI charts.

The credibility of the authorship and the nature of the affiliations are also questionable, as this information is not listed within the App or the Recovery Record website. This is a noted failure of the App

Organization of information

A navigation menu appears along the bottom of the screen, allowing you to move between the Home screen, client profiles, and a ‘more’ option which provides information about messaging options, your profile, tutorials, FAQ, pricing plans, and an About section.

Once you select your client profile, you can view all patient logs, or one of your choosing e.g. disordered thoughts, coping skills, goals etc.  You also have the opportunity to view messages between the client. Lastly, you have access to a ‘client menu’ where you can set up and monitor a treatment plan, manage communication, and other patient data.

Note: We were using the free, 1 patient demo version of the app, but we don’t expect the organization of information to change much between the free and paid versions.

Navigation

The App is easy to navigate overall.  It is a very visual- based App incorporating the use of colour, images and emoticons, which may appeal to some users.

Note: We were using the free, 1 patient demo version of the app, but we don’t expect navigation to change much between the free and paid versions.
