Save References

The steps below outline how to export references from databases and then import them into EndNote.

  1. Run a search and view the results page.
  2. Use the checkboxes to the left of the article titles to select references to be exported.
  3. When you are done making selections, click the Send To button found below the search bar.
  4. In the small menu that opens up, select Citation Manager. 
  5. Verify your selection and click on Create File.
  6. Save and download the file.
  7. Open the file. The new references should populate automatically in your EndNote library.

Note: You can safely delete the file once the references have been added to EndNote. 

e.g., MEDLINE, Embase, ERIC, PsycInfo

  1. Run a search and view the results page.
  2. Use the checkboxes to the left of article titles to select references to be exported.
  3. When you are done making selections, find and click the Export link above the search results.
  4. In the small window that appears, set the format to EndNote (or RIS), set Fields to Citation, Abstract, check the box for Link to External Resolver, uncheck the box for URL, and click Export.
  5. Save and download the file.
  6. Open the file. The new references should populate automatically in your EndNote library.

Note: You can safely delete the file once the references have been added to EndNote. 

e.g., CINAHL, Nursing Reference Center, Business Source Elite

  1. Run a search and view the results page.
  2. Click the folder icon next to article titles to select the references to be exported.
  3. When done making selections, click the Folder link found in the menu along the top right of the screen.
  4. You will be shown a list of the selected references.
  5. Click the Export button on the right side of the screen
  6. Select the option Direct Export in RIS Format (e.g. CITAVI, EasyBib, EndNote, ProCite, Reference Manager, Zotero), then click Save.
  7. Save and download the file.
  8. Open the file. The new references should populate automatically in your EndNote library.

Note: You can safely delete the file once the references have been added to EndNote. 

  • References obtained via Google Scholar commonly have missing fields and issues leading to erroneous citations.
  • It is highly recommended you export references directly from the journal's website, or use a research database such as PubMed or MEDLINE to get detailed and accurate references.
  • If you must export from Google Scholar, verify that the imported references are accurate.

Setup

  1. You must adjust Scholar's settings to enable importing to EndNote.
  2. Go to Google Scholar, click the menu icon in the top left corner and select Settings.
  3. In the Search results tab, under Bibliography manager, change the option to Show links to import citations into EndNote.
  4. Click save.

Export

  1. Run a search and view the results page
  2. Click the Import into EndNote link for each individual reference to save.
  3. Save/download the file.
  4. Open the file to import the reference into EndNote
  5. You can safely delete the export file(s).
